Is Your Child Ready for Contact Lenses? By Dr. Elise Brisco
Many children desire contact lenses (CL), instead of glasses, for cosmetic reasons or for playing sports, but parents often ask me if their child is ready for
contact lenses.
From a medical perspective, a child can safely wear contact lenses as early as when he or she is an infant.
If we need to fit an infant with contact lenses, we teach the parent to apply, remove, and care for the lenses.
Since there are no medical concerns, I recommend that the parents and child jointly decide whether the child is ready to handle the responsibility of wearing
and caring for contact lenses.
Examples of contact lens "readiness" for young children may include the ability to keep his or her room orderly, or good personal grooming habits.
Once the decision to wear contact lenses has been made, I will evaluate your child for the contact lens program that is most appropriate for him or her.
There is a wide variety of options available including disposable contact lenses for healthy wear and simplicity of care, and gas permeable lenses which can slow down the progression of myopia.
